The conjunctiva is vital in protecting the eye from injury or infection, thus ensuring the preservation of vision. Repair of conjunctival infection damage is necessary. In view of this, Professor Xiu-Mei Mo and Researcher Xing-Ping Zhou at Donghua University, among others, highlight the development of Electrospun Nanofbers with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, and their demonstration of promising results in the treatment of conjunctival injuries. The research results are entitled ‘Flexible Copper-Doped Silica Fibers Promote Infected Conjunctival Tissue Repair Through Antibacterial and Anti-inflammatory Effects’. The research results were published in the journal Advanced Fiber Materials under the title ‘Flexible Copper-Doped Silica Fibers Promote Infected Conjunctival Tissue Repair Through Antibacterial and Anti-inflammatory Effects.

The main point of this paper

1.Copper-doped flexible silica Electrospun Nanofbers (SiO2@Cu NFs) with multifunctional antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties were developed in this study.

2. The sustained release of copper ions in the Electrospun Nanofiber Membrane could effectively promote its antimicrobial and biological activities. The Nanofiber Membrane also exhibited biocompatibility and promoted cell growth, angiogenesis and inflammation modulation.

3. In vivo evaluation further revealed the therapeutic effect of SiO2@Cu NFs in promoting the restoration of conjunctival structure and function.

In summary, SiO2@Cu NFs may hold significant promise in the fabrication of alternative ocular bandages to inhibit bacterial infections and promote ocular tissue repair, and may also be used in related disciplines.

How do SiO2@Cu NFs promote antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects in infected conjunctival tissues?

Copper doped silica Electrospun Nanofbers have been shown to have strong antimicrobial properties by releasing copper ions to promote antibacterial action in infected conjunctival tissues. These fibres inhibit the growth of bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, in vitro and in vivo, leading to a significant reduction in bacterial colonisation. In addition, copper ions released from the fibres induced anti-inflammatory effects that may reduce inflammation at the site of injury. The fibres also exhibit biocompatibility, promoting cell growth, angiogenesis and inflammation modulation, contributing to the repair process.

How does electrospinning contribute to the development of tissue resist materials?

Nanofiber Membrane is biocompatible and non-toxic to cells and tissues, allowing cell adhesion, proliferation and migration. This biocompatibility supports cell growth and tissue regeneration. These membranes also promote angiogenesis, and the formation of new blood vessels is essential for the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to healing tissues. In addition, Nanofiber Membrane helps to regulate inflammation by reducing the inflammatory response at the site of injury, creating a more favourable environment for tissue repair.

Overall, these properties of Nanofiber Membrane support the repair process by promoting cell growth, angiogenesis and inflammation regulation in damaged tissues
