Dropping in electrospinning process: A general strategy for fabrication of microspheres 2021-03-19

The dropping mechanism in the electrospinning process is elucidated. A moving jet becomes thinner at the initial stage due to the acceleration caused by the electrostatic force. When the jet diameter reaches a threshold, beyond which the jet breaks into drops and daughter jets, dropping occurs. The drops will finally form microspheres. Effects of applied voltage, flow rate, polymer’s concentration and receptor’s distance on the dropping process are theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified. This paper gives a general strategy for fabrication of smooth fiber, microspheres, and their mixture.

Fragrance encapsulation in polymeric matrices by emulsion electrospinning 2021-03-19

We present the successful application of emulsion electrospinning for the encapsulation of a model for highly volatile fragrances, namely (R)-(+)-limonene in a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) fibrous matrix. The influence of the emulsion formulation and of its colloidal properties on the fiber morphology, as well as on the limonene encapsulation efficiency, is described. The release profile of the fragrance from the electrospun nanofibers over a fifteen days range shows that this type of nanofibrous matrices with a high fragrance loading capacity is of great potential for applications in various fields, such as cosmetics or food packaging.

Cosmetic products are generally formulated as emulsions, ointments, solutions or powders containing active ingredients. However, science advancement in both active carriers and ingredients has streamlined the process through which many cosmetic products by their delivery systems can induce modifications on the skin physiology. The so-called cosmeceuticals, in fact, may induce modifications on the skin physiology, modifying, for example, transepidermal water loss, keratinocytes cohesion and turnover, modulating the inflammatory cascade, and/or altering the surface microbiota by the activity of the preservatives content. Nanofibers in Cosmetics 2021-03-19

Nanofibers form the broadest class of nanomaterials due to their unique properties.High surface-area-to-volume ratios, low diameters, high strength values, low basis weights, high porosities, and small pore sizes make them good candidates for numerous applications. Cosmetics are one of these important application areas. Excellent interaction with environment (e.g., skin or damaged tissue), increased loading capacity for agents, high liquid absorption capacities, high oxygen, and water vapor permeability values are provided by characteristic properties of nanofibers. They are used as therapeutics, facial masks, skin care, and renewal products. This chapter will provide an overview of nanofibers in cosmetics. A brief history of cosmetics, different types of nanomaterials used in cosmetics, nanofiber properties, and production methods are described in this chapter. Novel applications of nanofibers in cosmetics are also mentioned.

Nanofibrous cosmetic face mask for transdermal delivery of nano gold: synthesis, characterization, release and zebra fish employed toxicity studies 2021-03-19

This study involves the generation of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) via a novel natural/non-toxic methodology using tea and orange-peel extracts. These were then embedded into a novel blend composed of a polyethylene oxide and gelatin (PEO-Gel) fibre mat. The scanning electron microscopy results indicated that the addition of both collagen (COL) and ascorbic acid (AA) into the PEO-Gel system (PEO-Gel-AA-COL system) enhances the Au NP incorporation into nanofibres leading to a diameter of 164.60 ± 20.95 and 192.43 ± 39.14 nm in contrast to the spraying observed with the Au PEO-Gel system alone. Releasing studies conducted over 30 min indicated that the PEO-Gel-AA-COL-orange peel Au (OpAu) system accounts for a higher content of Au release than the green tea Au (GtAu) NP system where a maximum release could be attained within 10–30 min depending on the amount of Au NPs that have been incorporated. Engineering optimization of commercial facemask formulations capable of improving skin moisturization 2021-03-19

The stratum corneum is the biggest obstacle in cosmetics with respect to skin moisturization. Many approaches have been taken to overcome the barrier, one of which is incorporating natural cosmeceuticals into cosmetic products to enhance moisturization effects. Here, a commercial facemask formulation was electrospun to develop dry facemasks capable of hosting cosmeceuticals within the pores of incorporated mesoporous silica.

Novel Vitamin and Gold-Loaded Nanofiber Facial Mask for Topical Delivery 2021-03-19

L-ascorbic acid has been widely used in cosmetic and dermatological products because of its ability to scavenge free radicals and destroy oxidizing agents. However, it is chemically unstable and can easily be oxidized. The current cosmetic facial masks available in the market are pre-moistened, which means that the aqueous fluid content of the mask may oxidize some of the unstable active ingredients such as ascorbic acid. This work presents an anti-wrinkle nanofiber face mask containing ascorbic acid, retinoic acid, gold nanoparticles, and collagen. This novel face mask will only be wetted when applied to the skin, thus enhancing product stability. Once moistened, the content of the mask will gradually dissolve and release the active ingredients and ensure maximum skin penetration. The high surface area-to-volume ratio of the nanofiber mask will ensure maximum contact with the skin surface and help to enhance the skin permeation to restore its healthy appearance. Development of Natural Facial Mask for Skincare from Local Materials 2021-03-19

This research aims to develop a natural facial mask from local materials. The latter are natural materials which could be found locally. In this study, we have selected local materials such as silk fibroin, mulberry, and chitosan. Silk fibroin is active ingredient in the prototype because of its high antioxidant activity. On the other hand, the mulberry extract is antioxidant and antibacterial activity in the facial mask. In the meantime, chitosan could be extracted from local materials such as squid pen and shrimp shells. Preliminary Studies on an Innovative Bioactive Skin Soluble Beauty Mask Made by Combining Electrospinning and Dry Powder Impregnation 2021-03-19

The world of cosmetics is now aiming at biobased materials which are skin-compatible and can be used to generate more sustainable beauty masks with enhanced bioactivity. This work presents, in this line of interest, the combination of two innovative technologies, namely electrospinning and dry powder impregnation, to generate biobased skin soluble electrospun pullulan carriers dry impregnated with chitin nanofibrils-nanolignin-glycyrrethinic acid (CLA) complexes, as effective biobased and skin compatible beauty masks. The scalability of the pullulan electrospun carrier and bioactive complexes impregnation were optimized and the morphology evaluated. Tough, anti-freezing and non-drying double network organohydrogels 2021-03-19

Herein, a novel double network polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin/glycerol (PVA/GEL/GL) organohydrogel is reported and fabricated. The existence of GEL improves the high mechanical strength based on the strong hydrogen bonds from PVA and GL, endowing the organohydrogels with excellent flexibility and biocompatibility. Especially, PVA/GEL/GL organohydrogels can maintain excellent mechanical flexibility at −25 °C, and possess remarkable non-drying even at 85 °C. It also exhibits good mildewproof property after 15 days. Meanwhile, remoldability endows organohydrogels to be recycled and reused, even as substitute materials for soil to cultivate plants. Thus, PVA/GEL/GL organohydrogels as a biological material have great potential great potential in fields of biomedicine, and even industry and agriculture.
